Finally, a Springsteen show! Since I missed the Born in the USA tour, now I have my chance to see a show. Bruce released Tunnel of Love in the fall of 1987. The Tunnel of Love Express tour was announced in the winter. I wasn’t going to miss out on this one! He was playing the Capital Centre in Largo, MD. For the past few concerts Cindy Navarre had been getting tickets at her work. Unfortunately, tickets for were going on-sale on a Saturday, the ticket outlet at her work was closed on the weekend. We had to figure out the best alternate location. We decided to go straight to the source, the Capital Center. We got in the line and on the list for tickets. How it worked was about an hour before the tickets went on-sale, a random draw would take place so there wasn’t a mob scene. Once they did the draw for places in queue, Cindy, Dave and I each drew pretty good spots in line. We felt confident now. Tickets went on-sale and we scored our tickets!
This all took place about two weeks before the show. In 1987, you didn’t have to wait months between the time the show went on-sale and the actual show, this was typically a matter of weeks/days. The show rolled around. I took my brother, Chuck Young, with me to the show, and I really didn’t know any girls to date at this point in my life. We arrived to the show and usually for events at the Capital Centre they charged for parking. When we pulled in, a local radio station, WAVA, paid for the parking! This was the coolest radio station promotion that I have ever witnessed. Now on with the show!
We got to our seats, which weren’t bad. I was pumped up! This is 5 years of waiting to see Bruce and here I was! The lights went down and the show got underway. I didn’t know the setlist, and that was how it worked. Bruce could have literally played anything that night and we wouldn’t know if it was common or rare. As I was singing and dancing along, a guy behind me yelled at me to sit down. I was insulted and didn’t listen to him. I also remembered this and I never tell people to sit at a show. All in all, the show progressed and I had a great time! The wait was worth it!
Just a note, for the various concerts I attend, I am not going to breakdown my thoughts and feelings on every song played. That would take days to write for each concert. I am also avoiding linking to articles about the shows. This is simply the shows I attended and my personal circumstances surrounding the show. With most shows, the circumstances around a show is more memorable than the actual concert.
